18 Best San Francisco Dog Friendly Beaches (2024)
Looking for the best San Francisco dog friendly beaches? I’ve got you covered!
My golden retriever and I recently went on a hunt for the best dog friendly beaches – both on and off leash – in the Bay Area so he could live his full water dog fantasy.
I’ve summed up the 18 best ones we found – and noted what you can expect there for both yourself and your furry four-legged friend.
Let’s dive in – like my dog did into the crashing waves, although hopefully we won’t get as sandy by the end of this post!
๐พ If you’re taking your furry friend to the beach, be sure to use a car seat protector! This one is my favorite.
1. Mile Rock Beach
Located right in the city of San Francisco, this beach is small but mighty. It’s a hidden beach wth great views of the Golden Gate Bridge and it’s located in the stunning Sea Cliff neighbourhood.
You can get to the beach by hiking Land’s End trail – a dog friendly hiking trail. Park at the Land’s End parking lot and make your way down from El Camino Del Bar and Point Lobos Avenue.
When you arrive, be sure to keep your dog leashed until you determine if they can handle being off-leash. While this is an off leash area, dogs must be under voice control. And it can get so windy that you can’t even hear your own voice! Especially with the crash of the waves. Or if they love to chase seagulls.
Nearby is Land’s End off leash dog beach, so you can get two beaches in one!
The sandy shore is a bit rocky and pebbly, so dogs with sensitive paw pads might need shoes. Or if your dog is a rock fiend like mine, you may need to leash them so they don’t try to dig out all of the rocks and fling sand at the other dogs!
This isn’t a super crowded beach. It’s mostly locals that visit as tourists don’t tend to know about it. Visit early in the morning for an almost private beach experience.
Type: Off Leash
Parking: Yes at the Land’s End trail lot
Cost: Free
Location: Here
Hours: 24/7
Restrooms?: Land’s End visitor center and Land’s End parking lot
2. Pacifica State Beach
This surfing hot spot is also dog friendly!
Dogs must remain on leash at this dog friendly beach since it’s a shorebird habitat.
The sandy beach has a network of trails for hiking and biking, and even some cool tide pool areas to check out. The dunes are great for playing with your dog on a longer lead and getting out their energy by climbing the dunes.
This is a part of the state park, and as such you need to pay a fee to park here.
This is a more popular beach so if your dog doesn’t do well with crowds or noise, you may want to skip this one.
Type: On Leash
Parking: Pacifica State Beach Parking lots
Cost: $7 for 4 hours or $9 for all day
Location: Here
Hours: 5am to 10:30pm in summer, or 5am to 7pm in winter
Restrooms?: Yes by parking lot
3. Montara State Beach
Montara State Beach is named for its location at the base of the Montara Mountain, part of the Santa Cruz mountain range. It’s in Half Moon Bay, which is so gorgeous and has the best clam chowder!
It’s a smaller beach that isn’t often crowded, making it great for dogs. The waves here are gentle and the sand is soft and inviting. It’s pretty shallow too, so your dog can splash around without risk of currents.
But since it’s a popular spot for surf fishing and tide pools, dogs must be on leash to not disturb others.
It’s a quiet beach so no disturbances like fires, fireworks or drones are permitted. This keeps it pretty clear of garbage as well, since people aren’t littering at night around a campfire.
When you visit the beach I recommend checking out the Point Montara lighthouse nearby. It’s a really cool building that also offers accommodations.
The trails on top of the cliffs are gorgeous, but can get very muddy. Theo definitely made use of the seat protector in the back of our rental car after our hike!
Type: On Leash (6ft max)
Parking: Street parking or free lot at Montara State Beach
Cost: Free
Location: Here
Hours: 8 am till sunset
Restrooms?: Yes, portable toilet at the beach parking lot
4. Thornton State Beach
Thornton State Beach is a great spot for dog lovers looking to explore the California coast. With its remote location and stunning views, this beach offers plenty of opportunities to get outdoors with your pup. The bluffs above provide lovely hiking trails that offer spectacular ocean views, while the sandy beach below allows dogs to splash around in the gentle waves and explore the tide pools.
Dog owners should note that leashes are required at Thornton State Beach, but itโs worth it for an unforgettable experience with your furry friend!
Horse riders also pass through this area, so it’s a good idea to avoid it if your dog is spooked by horses.
Type: On Leash
Parking: Skyline Blvd Parking
Cost: Free
Location: Here
Hours: None Listed
Restrooms?: No
5. Fort Funston Beach
Fort Funston Beach is super popular with San Francisco dog owners. It’s a great spot for pups to run around the beach while always in sight. The hills around the beach ensure you can always see your dog as they play in the surf or go fetch.
This classic Californian beach is at the mercy of the elements, so bring a jacket or windbreaker since it can get very cold or damp all of a sudden.
To get to the beach, you have to go through a bit of a hike along a trail. It’s very beginner friendly, but it can get muddy so wear shoes you don’t care too much about. Climbing back up the little hill can be challenging for older people or mobility challenged individuals, so keep that in mind.
It’s very sandy though, so have a towel ready in the car!
Type: Off Leash
Parking: 104 Fort Funston Road
Cost: Free
Location: Here
Hours: 7am to 9pm
Restrooms?: Portable toilet at parking lot
6. Crissy Field Beach
Crissy Field Beach is regularly said to be one of the best San Francisco dog friendly beaches. With views of the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz Island, it’s more popular with tourists too which is why I have it lower on the list.
The off leash beach is very cute, but it can get a bit over crowded for my tastes.
One major pro of this beach is that it has dog friendly eateries nearby. The West Bluff picnic area is on-leash dog friendly. And the Warming Hut cafe has spots to tether dogs while you get food.
There’s also a lovely promenade along the back of the beach so you can take your dog for a walk if you find the beach too full.
Type: Off Leash
Parking: East Beach Parking Lot
Cost: Free
Location: Here
Hours: 24/7
Restrooms?: Yes at parking lot
7. Pacifica Esplanade Beach
Esplanade Beach is a great place to bring your dog for an off leash swim or a water-based fetch. The currents can get strong some days, so if your dog isn’t a strong swimmer, consider a life jacket.
The sandy beach is at the bottom of a cliff, but the path is pretty easy to walk on. They’ve cleared a long path from the top to the bottom, but on rainy days it can feel a bit like trudging through quick sand trying to get up it.
But your dog will thank you for the walk because it means they get to run around this secluded beach area to their heart’s content!
While your pup plays, keep your eyes peeled for whales.
Type: Off Leash
Parking: Street parking
Cost: Free
Location: Here
Hours: 5am to Sunset, closed Sundays and Tuesdays
Restrooms?: No
8. Albany Bulb Beach
This former landfill is now an open air art exhibit and a dog friendly beach! (Two things I never thought I’d say together.)
Dogs must be leashed, but many people don’t respect this rule. I recommend you keep your dog on leash to avoid any issues with other dogs or other visitors.
This beach isn’t super clear – there’s rocks and driftwood. My pup loves driftwood so for us that’s a plus, but many don’t.
Weekends are pretty busy here, so try to visit on weekdays.
Type: On Leash
Parking: 1 Buchanan Street
Cost: Free
Location: Here
Hours: Not Listed
Restrooms?: No
9. Rodeo Beach
This wide pebbled beach is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, and is a great spot for hikers, bird-watchers, photographers and anyone who wants to take their pup on an off leash adventure.
The beach is just south of Fort Cronkite so there’s lots of interesting military history to explore. There are also rocks in the surf that make for some very photogenic shots.
The beach is sometimes windy, so be prepared with a jacket or a windbreaker. And always keep an eye on your pup since the currents can get strong at times.
Type: Off Leash
Parking: Fort Cronkite Parking Lot
Cost: Parking might be paid
Location: Here
Hours: Not Listed
Restrooms?: Yes on south end
10. Baker Beach
Baker Beach is a long beach with incredible views of the Golden Gate Bridge and it’s a popular spot for picnics. Dogs must be kept on leash, but you’ll get to enjoy watching well-mannered dogs playing in the sand.
The beach itself is sandy which makes it easy to walk along. But there are no fences so if your dog isn’t good at staying nearby, don’t let them off leash here.
Also note that this is a clothing optional beach, so it’s not uncommon to see naked people sunbathing.
If you’re looking for a place to take your dog and get some great pictures, this is definitely the spot.
Type: Off Leash (north of Lobos Creek)
Parking: Free lot
Cost: Free
Location: Here
Hours: 24/7
Restrooms?: Yes at parking lot
11. Muir Beach
Muir Beach isn’t right in San Francisco, its located in Muir Woods. While the woods aren’t dog friendly for hiking, the beach is and so is the coastal bluffs.
Theo and I spent a lovely day here. The soft sand was great for his first intro to the Bay, although the waves were pretty loud so he was a bit nervous until some other dogs ran in with him.
We then hiked the Bluffs which seemed to just be uphill somehow. Even so, it was a clear trail.
The beach itself is a very short walk from the parking lot on a little boardwalk then up a tiny hill. It’s pretty easy to walk up and down it.
There are trash bins near the bathrooms for poop bags!
Type: Off Leash
Parking: Free Muir Beach lot
Cost: $10 for day pass
Location: Here
Hours: 8am to sunset
Restrooms?: Yes at parking lot
12. Ocean Beach
Dog friendly Ocean Beach is a great spot for those who like to take their pup on a long walk. The beach stretches 3.5 miles and is a great place to watch the sunset or sunrise with your fur-baby by your side.
Dogs can be off leash from stairwells 1 to 21, but on the rest of the beach they must be on leash.
The water can be hazardous, so no swimming. But for a long and scenic beach walk with your pup this is the spot!
Arrive early as this beach fills up with tourists by about 11 am.
Type: Partially off leash
Parking: Limited street parking
Cost: Free
Location: Here
Hours: 6 am to 9:30pm
Restrooms?: Yes, between Sloat Blvd and Judah Street
13. Lands End Off-Leash Dog Beach
Lands End is an off-leash beach located next to Mile Rock Beach. It offers stunning views of the Golden Gate Bridge and the Marin Headlands, as well as three shipwrecks that are exposed at low tides.
It’s a long walk from the visitor center (about 1 mile) so make sure you’re properly prepared before venturing off.
The beach itself is relatively small so it’s not a great spot if you want to let your pup run around and play fetch, but the views are worth the trek! Just remember to keep an eye on them since there are some strong currents.
The most striking feature of Lands End is the Labyrinth, a small stone labyrinth made in the sand. It’s kind of a pinwheel shape and is a great photo op!
Type: Off Leash
Parking: Pacifica State Beach Parking lots
Cost: $7 for 4 hours or $9 for all day
Location: Here
Hours: 5am to 10:30pm in summer, or 5am to 7pm in winter
Restrooms?: Yes by parking lot
14. Stinson Beach
Stinson Beach is a popular spot for swimming, volleyball and hang-gliding. It’s also great place to take your pup if they love the water – there are plenty of waves, with the surfers taking full advantage all year round.
If you want to get in on the boogie boarding, shops nearby rent equipment for use on the beach. Dogs must be leashed, but there is plenty of space for them to run around and enjoy the sand, as well as fresh water available throughout the day.
However, dogs aren’t allowed everywhere. It’s only dog friendly on Upton Beach and closer to the private homes. Avoid the National Park Service section of the beach.
It’s also a popular day trip spot for locals and tourists alike and can get a bit crowded during peak hours. But with the beautiful views and activities to partake in, it’s hard to resist!
Type: On Leash
Parking: Stinson Beach Parking Lot
Cost: Free
Location: Here
Hours: 9am to sunset
Restrooms?: Restrooms adjacent to parking areas
15. Pillar Point Harbor
Pillar Point Harbor is a great spot for fishing, picnicking and admiring the view. It has a long pier, as well as plenty of sandy beaches and rocky coves to explore.
It’s also incredibly dog friendly – dogs are welcome on leash throughout the harbor. Since it’s a marine area, dogs must stay on leash or you risk a fine of $10k. Plus, with the seals about, you don’t want your dog getting too close.
But there’s still plenty of fun to be had. The harbor is also a great spot for sunset viewing, and it’s easy to walk up and down the pier with your pup. Plus, there are trash bins near the bathrooms with poop bags if you need them!
Pillar Point is known for the world-famous Mavericks surf point with swells up to 60ft! When we visited someone was just paddling out and that alone looked exhausting.
Head to Half Moon Bay afterwards for excellent crab and clam chowder!
Type: On Leash
Parking: Public Parking
Cost: Free
Location: Here
Hours: Unlisted
Restrooms?: Yes at parking lot
16. Bolinas Beach
Bolinas Beach is a great spot for taking your pup on an off-leash walk. It’s best to watch the tide tables as some areas of the beach can be cut off at high tide.
It’s also a popular surf spot, but with small waves so it’s relatively safe if you have a water-loving dog. Near the beach is a dog-friendly restaurant, so you can grab some food afterwards!
The beach is small though so it can get crowded. It’s also a great spot for bird watching, as many species of birds flock here in the winter.
Be sure to pack poop bags as neighbors have complained about messes so leave no-waste is strictle enforced here!
Type: Off Leash
Parking: Street parking
Cost: Free
Location: Here
Hours: Not Listed
Restrooms?: No
17. San Quentin Beach
San Quentin Beach is a hidden gem that’s much less crowded than nearby beaches. It’s also great for pups since the waves are gentle and there’s plenty of room to play.
The views of Richmond Bridge and San Francisco Bay make it an even better spot, especially during sunrise and sunset! Just keep in mind that parking is limited and the 1 hour limit on much of it is strictly enforced.
It’s also not handicap accessible – there are stairs down to the beach, so if you’re looking for a more accessible beach you may want to look elsewhere.
Tennis balls abound here – so if your dog is toy possessive this isn’t a great off leash spot. You’ll find plenty of golden retrievers swimming out for their balls as they play fetch.
Type: Off Leash
Parking: Street parking (some have 1 hour limit)
Cost: Free
Location: Here
Hours: Not Listed
Restrooms?: No
18. Mussel Rock Beach
Mussel Rock Beach is a great spot for hanging out with your pup and exploring the trails that weave through the hillsides. It’s popular amongst paragliders, hang glider, hikers, walkers and birdwatchers.
Unfortunately dogs are not allowed off leash on this beach, so keep them leashed throughout – even on the trails. But if your pup loves to explore and get their paws sandy, the north end of Mussel Rock has sandy shores.
The rock arch that gives the beach its name (“Mussel Rock”) is accessible at low tides – so this is a great spot for some photos ops. But it’s important to keep an eye on the water levels as they can change quickly!
The hikes were my favorite here, but to be honest it wasn’t my favorite dog friendly beach in San Francisco.
Type: On Leash
Parking: End of Westline Drive
Cost: Free

How to Get to the Beaches
If you’re looking for the best way to get to the beaches near San Francisco, driving is your best bet.
Not only will you have more control over when and where you arrive, but it’s also much faster than public transportation or walking. And it can be tough with larger dogs to find any other way to get around.
With a car, you can easily access all of the beaches in no time!
Plus, if there are multiple people going with you, then it can be a great way to save money on travel costs since everyone can split the gas bill.
Driving also allows for flexibility in terms of planning – if something comes up unexpectedly during your trip, like an unforeseen delay or change in plans, then it’s easy to adjust accordingly with a car.
So whether you’re just visiting for the day or planning an extended beach vacation near San Francisco, driving is certainly worth considering!
But if you’re driving, I recommend a dog seat protector. These beaches are sandy and you don’t want to have to vacuum that out after a tiring day at the beach.
