Where to Travel With Your Pet

There are so many epic places to travel around the world, but not all of them are great for pet travel.

I’ve taken my dog, Theo, with me to 3 countries and over 20 cities in the last year. Many of them I wouldn’t recommend for dog owners – but there are plenty I would!

Here are a few places to consider taking your dog on your next vacation:

Italy

From the Amalfi Coast to Venice, Italy is an incredible place to take your pup.

There are tons of pet-friendly beaches, restaurants, and even hotels that will welcome you both with open arms.

Small dogs are often welcome at local museums, cafes, and even on tours. While they can’t go to the likes of the Vatican, they can often go to smaller venues with you and are almost always welcome at wineries.

Italy is known for being incredibly dog friendly, which makes it a great place to enjoy some time with your pup.

I lived in Italy long before I had a dog of my own, but I remember the amount of dogs I’d see in cafes, at the bakery, and even in the hotels I’d stay at.

It was one of the reasons I loved living there: so I could get my dog fix any time I wanted!

(And without buying one that I’d then need to figure out how to bring back to Canada … and convince my parents to keep in their house while I finished school).

Mexico

I took Theo to Mexico in March 2023 and can safely say the people are dog obsessed.

They absolutely love dogs – although many people do treat dogs differently than we do in Canada. There were a lot fewer dogs in boots and cute clothes than you might see in the rest of North America.

However, the dogs are mostly very well looked after.

There are plenty of amazing places to take your dog with you – especially if they are small to medium. Restaurants are fine with dogs, especially at any outdoor patio.

There are even some resorts that allow dogs, which is perfect for anyone looking for a chill getaway.

Our tour guide friend begged me to be able to take care of Theo, even though I told her as a service dog that he stays with me all the time. She’s had plenty of guests bring dogs on her kayaking excursions, or on her tours of local cultural centers.

And when they can’t, she offers dog sitting and dog walking to ensure your pet gets some exercise.

I’ve not found a place as all-inclusive yet!

USA

The US is a common dog friendly travel destination. If, like me, you have a large dog, it is one of the easiest places to go with a pet.

Since it’s very hard to fly with a large breed dog, you can instead go on a road trip. I just finished up a 4 week road trip across 10 States and a handful of National Parks with Theo.

While many of the parks are not dog friendly (stick with State Parks for that!), there were tons of hotel options and always a plethora of beaches.

I have a water dog and a love of reading on a beach, so hunting down the best beach spots works out great for me. Our favourite place so far is Tahoe, but we’ve found a lot of very close contenders.

The USA is the least chill about dogs in restaurants – even service dogs sometimes.

But they do have lots of patio options for dogs. You may need to call ahead as people will look at you like you have 3 heads if you show up with a large breed unannounced.

New Zealand

New Zealand is my favourite place on Earth and I can’t wait to share it with Theo.

I lived there for a year (yes, I’ve lived in a lot of places), and one of the best parts was how dog friendly it is.

Other than my office building, I saw dogs almost everywhere.

There are only a few trails for conservation reasons that don’t allow dogs. But many places like Piha and Devonport are popular for dogs to run in the surf. There are lots of gorgeous hiking trails that dogs can join you on.

And since the best way to experience New Zealand is in a campervan, many rentals are dog friendly. So you can wake up with a morning coffee, the earliest sunrise in the world, and your best furry friend right beside you.

Yes, getting a dog to New Zealand can be a bit harder. It’s definitely a trip to take for a longer period – and easier with small dogs.

There is a quarantine period you’ll have to adjust to – but this is a good time to go and do the non-dog friendly activities while they get 10 days of essentially boarding.

For example, go sky diving, swim with wild dolphins, or even hike the Tongariro Crossing to see Mount Doom. You can do all that in 7-14 days, and then bring your best bud on the rest of your trip.
